Tips

Here are some tips for any traveller to Malaysia.

Before going
  1. Make sure to check for any public holidays so you don't get caught in traffic jams. Here is a list of public holidays for 2013 and 2014, http://publicholidays.com.my/#_.
  2. Malaysia is quite hot with average temperatures of 38 C so be sure to pack light clothes.
  3. Electric supply is on a 240-volt 50-cycle system.
  4. Reconsider your need to travel to the coastal region of eastern Sabah due to the ongoing threat of kidnapping. The kidnapping threat in eastern Sabah includes dive sites and associated tourist facilities in the waters surrounding Sipadan Island, south of the town of Semporna. If you still want to go to an island try going to Redang, Tioman or Langkawi instead.
  5. The rainy season in Malaysia extends from October to Febuary.

When in Malaysia
  1. Bring a small packet of tissues along with you wherever you go, many hawker stalls and restrooms don't provide any.
  2. Dress conservatively when visiting places of worship such as temples or mosques.
  3. You shouldn't drink tap water straight from the taps in Malaysia. Boil it first.
  4. Homosexual activities are illegal.
  5. Some restaurants and hotels don't accept credit cards.
  6. Sign boards are written in English so you don't have to worry about it.
  7. Drive on the left side of the road.
  8. When buying branded things from stall in markets, there is a high chance of it being an imitation.
  9. You don't have to worry about going hungry or needing to go to the restroom during road trips because highways in Malaysia have frequent rest houses complete with restrooms, food stalls and gas.
  10. Most locals are friendly and can speak English so don't be afraid to ask for directions if you get lost.
